BSL Level 3

The Level 3 Certificate is the same value as the NVQ. The main differences are that it is divided in to  three units and all will be externally assessed. In other words a similar structure to the current level 2.

Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL)

This qualification caters for the learning needs of those who already have competence in BSL at Level 2. Successful learners must be able to demonstrate competence at Level 3 of the UK Occupational Language Standards (CILT, 2010). This means that the learner will be able to understand and use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.

The learner will develop an advanced knowledge of the structure and function of British Sign Language and an understanding of the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture.

Qualification structure

The qualification is divided into three units each of which will be assessed separately.

Essential requirements:  Learners must be able to demonstrate competence in BSL at post level 2.   Learners should be assessed at their induction to demonstrate their skills.

  • Unit BSL320 – Sign Linguistics Knowledge

Unit aim:  This unit is for learners who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in BSL Linguistics and Grammar. It will also enable learners to apply this knowledge when undertaking units BSL321 and BSL322 by supporting the requirements described in the assessment criteria of those units.

Assessment: Assessment for this unit will take the form of a 45 minute written question paper, containing approximately 12 questions based on the content of this unit.

This is assessed externally.

  •  Unit BSL321 – Understand varied British Sign Language in a range of work and social situations

Unit aim:  The aim of the unit is to enable learners to understand varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.

Assessment: For this unit candidates will be assessed on their understanding of a DVD conversation presented in BSL relating to work or social issues, including relevant deaf issues.

This is assessed externally.

  • Unit BSL322 – Use varied British Sign Language in a range of work and social situations

Unit aim: The aim of the unit is to enable learners to use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.

Assessment : The assessment for this unit is split into two parts:

Part A:   8-10 minute presentation by the candidate                         Part B: 10-12 minute conversation between the teacher and candidate

This is assessed externally.

In summary, it is a taught course, with lots of practical  hands on  skills in both receptive and productive BSL. It will include theory about the language itself and deaf culture as a whole. Throughout the course there will be homework and we would expect you will be able to practice your conversational skills outside also.

It will be very  useful to have access to internet, video camera to assist with your language development skill.
