Level 3 BSL
The Level 3 Certificate is the same value as the NVQ. The main differences are that it is divided in to three units and all will be externally assessed. In other words a similar structure to the current level 2.
Level 3 Certificate in British Sign Language (BSL)
This qualification caters for the learning needs of those who already have competence in BSL at Level 2. Successful learners must be able to demonstrate competence at Level 3 of the UK Occupational Language Standards (Instructus 2012). This means that the learner will be able to understand and use varied BSL in a range of work and social situations.
The learner will develop an advanced knowledge of the structure and function of British Sign Language and an understanding of the Deaf Community and Deaf Culture.
Qualification structure
The qualification is divided into three units each of which will be assessed separately.
Essential requirements: Learners must be able to demonstrate competence in BSL at post level 2. Learners should be assessed at a 1:1 induction to demonstrate their skills, in an informal setting. This qualification is listed as appropriate for learners pre 16 and older.
- LO1 - Use receptive and productive skills to engage in varied social interaction
- LO2 - Maintain fluency, grammatical accuracy and coherence in sustained contributions containing varied language
- LO3 - Understand sustained signed communication containing varied language
In summary, it is a taught course, with lots of practical, hands on skills in both receptive an productive BSL. It will include theory knowledge about the language itself and deaf culture as a whole. Throughout the course there will be homework and you will be expected to practice your conversational skills in your own time. You will need tohave at least an 80% attendance to be submitted for the assessments.
It will be very useful to have access to internet and a video camera to assist with your language development skill.
Fees: £1300 + assessment fees (Currently £144.00 for three units)
Venue: Cardiff Deaf Hub
Duration: 30 sessions and 3 Saturdays (1 per term)
